I’m a twenty-something female living in Australia. I study at university and also work part-time. Although my family aren’t religious (my grandmother and I are the only two practicing Catholics in the entire family) my faith is a huge part of my life. You could say my spiritual journey started when, as a teenager, I joined the youth group in my parish. From there I started to grow so much as a person, and in so many different ways. I was always the nerd at school, so it was really amazing as an incredibly insecure teenager to find a place where I was accepted for who I was, and where I was able to develop some true, lasting friendships. I was then able to attend World Youth Day in Sydney in 2008, which was another event that had a very great impact on me.
Eventually, as part of my university degree, I made my way to Colorado, USA, on a study abroad program. Thanks to my experiences in my youth group in Australia, I went over there looking for some sort of Christian group to get involved in. I was extremely blessed to be led to the most incredible parish, as well as to have the opportunity to get involved with FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. Through the incredible people I met in my parish in Colorado I was able to grow so much in my faith in an incredibly short space of time. In fact, looking back I still can’t believe how far I have come in just the last 18 months or so. I have learnt so much, met people who are wonderful witnesses to Christ in their everyday lives, and grown so much as a person. I have also developed a passionate love of Catholicism and have a continual thirst to learn more and to grow deeper in my spirituality.
After leaving the US and travelling around Europe for a bit, I returned to Australia where I am now trying to find ways in which I can continue to immerse myself in discovering God in my life, and growing in relationship with Him. I still very often take the wrong path or stumble along the way, but I continue to strive to overcome my weaknesses and work at becoming the best version of myself that I can be.
Candid Catholic is a blog in which I am hoping to share my thoughts on my faith and my spiritual journey as I try to grow closer to Christ, and to overcome my human weaknesses in order to truly become a woman of God and to share His love with the people around me.
